Connecting Golf Skills with Recovery Growth

Connecting Golf Skills with Recovery Growth explores how the fundamentals of golf can mirror the principles needed for lasting recovery. By applying lessons like patience, focus, and consistency on the course, participants learn how to strengthen the same skills in their everyday lives.

Week 1: Foundations — Grip, Stance & New Beginnings

Recovery Theme: Starting Fresh / One Day at a Time
Golf Focus: Grip, posture, alignment (7-iron)

Structure

0–10 min:
• Introductions
• “What brought you here?”
• Quick recovery check-in word

10–25 min:
• Light stretch
• Basic athletic posture drills
• No-ball swing drills

25–70 min:
• Proper grip instruction
• Stance & alignment
• Half swings with 7-iron
• Contact over distance emphasis

70–85 min:
Recovery Tie-In Discussion:
• How grip = foundation
• What are your “foundations” in recovery?
• Why small basics matter

85–90 min:
Takeaway: “Focus on contact, not perfection.”

Week 2: Tempo & Emotional Control

Recovery Theme: Managing Emotions & Triggers
Golf Focus: Swing tempo & rhythm

Skills
• 3:1 tempo drill
• Slow-motion swings
• Breathing before every shot
• Count “1-2-3” backswing, “hit” downswing

Recovery Activity

Practice a pre-shot breathing routine:
• 4-second inhale
• 4-second exhale
• Commit & swing

Discussion:
• What happens when we rush?
• How does slowing down help in recovery?

Takeaway: “You don’t have to swing hard to swing well.”

Week 3: Short Game — Small Wins Matter

Recovery Theme: Small Daily Wins
Golf Focus: Chipping & Pitching

Skills
• Basic chip setup (feet narrow, weight forward)
• Landing spot drill
• 10-ball up-and-down challenge

Recovery Tie-In
• Short game = scoring
• Recovery is built on daily small wins
• Celebrate progress, not perfection

Group Challenge:
Each player calls out one “win” from their week after each successful chip.

Takeaway: “Small shots change the score.”
